Augmented Reality’s Place In Consumerism

With our lives getting busier by the minute, we find ourselves cutting back on the time we spend shopping for products that will fit perfectly into our lives, rather focusing on the products that will fit perfectly into our schedules. If the rise of Amazon shoppers has taught us anything, its that it is more convenient to click “order” than it is to take time out of our weekends to shop for the items we once used to. Whether it being that second job, or the work/life balance we are trying to get right, our time for being a consumer has shrunk.

What can give us the opportunity to get the most out of our shopping but also the most out of our time? The solution: Augmented Reality. Augmented Reality or “AR” as more commonly called, is a technology that was used in the wildly successful game “Pokemon Go” that had people racing all across their cities looking for items to capture using their mobile devices. This same technology, AR, can now help you select furniture for your new home, try on a dress you like, or understand instructions to your new gadget.

AR is giving consumers the ability to shop for that “perfect fit” item without leaving their own home. Most of you have an AR device right in your pocket, most mobile devices have the capability of AR by activating your camera in certain consumer apps that are equip with an AR application function. Gartner recently released an article stating that they believe over 100 million consumers will use augmented reality for their shopping needs in 2020. That is a staggering amount especially considering this technology is relatively young. This gives retailers a huge new avenue to gain shoppers, and with the online shopping trend only gaining ground, AR is going to be a mainstay in our shopping experience.
